What is the background of the piece? What led you to write it? What’s your process?

I was reading the newspaper, and I came across a piece which described this particular short section of Canadian railroad (around 200 meters) which allowed freight to travel between Canada and the United States and thus avoid certain taxes. It seemed like such an odd thing that I immediately wished I could read more about it. My research ended up providing me with enough info that I decided to write something myself.

How did you feel when it was first published and how have your thoughts or feelings on the piece changed from then to now?

I am a relatively new writer. I’ve been at it for less than three years. This was one of my first pieces which was ever accepted, and I was thrilled when I got the news. It felt tremendously validating for a complete stranger to read something I wrote and to decide it was worth publishing for others to read.

Is there a specific message you’d like readers to take away from reading this piece?

I am fascinated by the thousands of tidbits of information available in the world all around me, each one which hide marvelous stories just waiting to be uncovered. This piece is just one of those stories. I must pass hidden gems all day long. It’s exciting just to be alive in a world like this one.

Where can readers find more of your work? (Website/social media, etc)

I have a number of small pieces popping up here and there throughout October and November. I post about them on twitter whenever one comes around. I have a novelette (In the Beginning) out right now from @emergejournal and a debut novella coming out in early 2024 from @darkwinterlit.
