BCC Shines A Light On: Will Davis

BCC Shines a Light On:

Will Davis

Name of the piece published by BCC:

field guide

When/where was it originally published:

The piece was originally accepted for the 'Floral' issue from the litmag Dreams Walking. This was around late

2022.

What is the background of the piece? What led you to write it? What’s your process?

I was seeking an outlet in my writing for the toxic patriotism and rampant mistreatment of folx from a

variety of backgrounds. “field guide” came from a meditation on “victory gardens” popularized in

wartime. The writing process was really just building between two opposing forces: verdant, lush

growth and decay, rot. The line breaks are a short garden stroll, the volta an outreach.

How did you feel when it was first published and how have your thoughts or feelings on the piece

changed from then to now?

BCC is actually the first time this piece found print! “field guide” became more meaningful in retrospect, and the

catalyst for its prevailing sentiment more obvious on revisiting.

Is there a specific message you’d like readers to take away from reading this piece?

Whenever we write, we are almost always writing about something. Sometimes the experience is a deep seam that reveals

itself with time. Or words.

Where can readers find more of your work? (Website/social media, etc)
