Name of the piece published by BCC:

white sangria

When/where was it originally published:

perhappened’s sixteenth and final issue, sweet, in April 2022

Tell us more about your piece! What is the background of the piece? What led you to write it? What’s your process?

This piece was one of the first ones I wrote for my hybrid memoir, you stupid slut. The book explores the ways in which my life has been touched by alcohol and sexual abuse, often simultaneously, and I feel this piece is an exemplar of that. I remember sitting down to write it and having it just flow out of me.

How did you feel when it was first published and how have your thoughts or feelings on the piece changed from then to now?

I was so proud of this piece, and I still am. I think that in terms of the trajectory of my body of work, it’s still one of the strongest pieces I’ve written to date.

Is there a specific message you would like readers to take away from reading this piece?

Not so much a message as a fun fact: this one actually has a companion piece, “red sangria,” which is a flash nonfiction piece about Election Night 2016. (That wasn’t as fun of a fact as I thought it was.)

What else would you like to tell readers about your writing?

you stupid slut sadly went out of print recently, but it’ll be back summer 2025 with Bullshit Lit! Stay tuned if you haven’t had the chance to pick this one up.

Where can readers find more of your work?

On the web at natraum.com, on most social media @gr8earlofhell, and on Substack at natraum.substack.com.
