Tell us more about your piece! What is the background of the piece? What led you to write it? What’s your process?
I first read Stephen King’s THE STAND when I was 9 years old and have been a fan of apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic stories/shows/movies ever since (ask me for my favorites!). I had always wanted to write one, but could never quite capture the right mood. Then I read ‘And the Winners Will Be Swept Out to Sea’ by Maria Dahvana Headley; her use of second-person POV intrigued me and I wanted to see if I could do something similar. I started with the line “The silence was nice in the beginning,” and it just flowed from there. I really wanted to capture the isolation of the main character being seemingly alone (or is she?) and the damage it caused to her mental health.
How did you feel when it was first published and how have your thoughts or feelings on the piece changed from then to now?
This is one of my favorite pieces I’ve ever written! It does hit a bit sharper now with COVID in the world, though. And I still really want to know what happened to Annie, the main character!
Is there a specific message you would like readers to take away from reading this piece?
Always be careful when burning candles in your home!
What else would you like to tell readers about your writing? (Doesn’t have to refer only to your BCC piece)
I love to write with strong imagery and sensory details! Lately I’ve been on a poetry kick, which I find very cathartic, even if it means neglecting my first novel, THE OTHER SIDE OF WINTER, which I am currently revising. I also have a tendency to leave my stories open-ended, like GENESIS, because no story is ever really over.
