Tell us more about your piece! What is the background of the piece? What led you to write it? What’s your process?
I wrote ‘Followed’ for a call about Sasquatch’ but it was rejected for that call. I shaped the poem to indicate the breath of the person lost in the snow becoming shorter and shorter.
How did you feel when it was first published and how have your thoughts or feelings on the piece changed from then to now?
Very happy when it was published. Musing Publications put out lovely magazines. They had gorgeous art. When they closed without warning many people were devastated. I’m glad journals like Bulb Culture exist to pick up the pieces.
Is there a specific message you would like readers to take away from reading this piece?
Some have read it as Sasquatch, others as a bear. The main thing I want readers to get is not to prejudge what wanders in the night, especially in a dark place such as a forest. I wanted to show the fear without a base for it.
What else would you like to tell readers about your writing? (Doesn’t have to refer only to your BCC piece)
I write whatever comes to me. Sometimes I’m inspired by a call like with ‘Followed.’ Other times, I get ideas from listening to other poets or from workshops.
