Tell us more about your piece! What is the background of the piece? What led you to write it? What’s your process?

I believe I noticed a category at Word Riot (an edgy journal that was online from 2002-2016) titled “experimental forms.” I decided to write something that reflected that.

Hairstyling was one of my obsessions when I wrote this. The story was a way to experiment with different points of view and missed opportunities in a seemingly mundane setting. I was reading voraciously at the time which made it easier to try out different styles.

How did you feel when it was first published and how have your thoughts or feelings on the piece changed from then to now?

I’ll always be grateful to the Word Riot team as it was one of my first pieces published online.

I appreciate the fresh and confident style and flow of the story. It’s an approach I hope to continue applying to newer projects after a long writing hiatus.

Is there a specific message you would like readers to take away from reading this piece?

Recognizing that a lot may be going on beneath the surface.

Or some other message I wasn’t aware of and should know about.

What else would you like to tell readers about your writing? (Doesn’t have to refer only to your BCC piece)

As a Pisces Moon, I aim for an authentic emotional undercurrent in my writing most of the time.

This year, I’m trying to improve on short story and genre writing (I have ideas but need some help with piecing it all together!).

Where can readers find more of your work? (Website/social media, etc)

I can be found occasionally blogging, musing, and analyzing @ www.jesschua.com
